1. Clary Fray goes to Pandemonium (a club) with her friend (Simon) and witnesses a 'murder'. A man (Jace) is telling her he's a demon hunter and killing a demon. She gets freaked out when she realizes she's the only one who can see them.
2. Clary's mom wants to leave town and Clary gets angry and leaves to go hang out with her friends. While she's there, she gets a call from her mom. Her mom is being attacked and Clary rushes home to find her apartment a mess, her mother missing and a giant demon in her bedroom
3. Jace finds Clary and brings her back to the Institute to explain to her the how World and how they're Nephilim, born to rid the world of demons. Clary learns that her mother is a Nephilim and never told her. She also finds out that her mother was once married to (her father) an evil Shadowhunter Valentine who has now kidnapped her) because he thinks she has The Mortal Cup, which he needs to take over the Nephilim race.
4. Clary and Jace learn that Clary has a block on her early memories in the back of her mind. They call in healers called the Silent Brothers to break the block in her mind, but it doesn't work. But she learns that a warlock Magnus Bane put it there.
5. to find her mom, Clary goes with Jace and his adopted siblings to a party (with Simon) hosted by Magnus Bane to talk to him. The learn that her mom sent Clary to see Magnus when she was younger to have her memory erased so she wouldn't have the power to see the demon world. When they're done they found out the Simon drank a potion and was turned into a rat and stolen by vampires.
6. Clary and Jace head to the Hotel Dumort (vampire laire) where they find Simon and battle a bazillion vampires (and werewolves).
7. The next night is Clary's birthday. Jace takes Clary to the greenhouse for a picnic at Midnight where he tells of his past and they share their first kiss. When Clary goes back to her room, she runs into Simon who was extremely jealous and proceeds to tell her that she's stupid and he's been in love with her all their lives. Both boys storm off.
8. Clary figures out where her mom hid the cup and shows Jace that her mom painted it INTO a picture using magic rune stones. They head back to her apartment building to Madame Dorthea's to get it where they run into a Greater Demon and have to fight him off to get out alive with the cup.
9. Clary and Jace and his Siblings and Simon all return to the Institute and Clary watches evil Valentine come and take Jace and the cup away and learns that their tutor Hodge was in league with him all along. She goes off with her moms friend (who she learns is a werewolf) with his pack to rescue Jace and her mom
10. She gets to Valentines hideout, finds her mom in a coma in one of Valentine's rooms and finds Jace in another. She tries to get Jace out when Valentine comes and they meet officially for the first time (her father). Then Jace tells her that he was wrong, his dad's not dead, his dad is Valentine. Then Valentine proceeds to tell them they're brother and sister and they both are mad cause they're in love.
Yeah. Then Valentine steals the cup and disappears.
