There are far more than four rules. As a matter of fact, there are whole books dedicated to just voice leading. If one were to break things down into some simplified form, though, one could say:

1. Repeat harmony tones when possible.

2. Avoid parallel 5ths, unisons and octaves.

3. Avoid contrary motion.

4. Do not cross voices.

5. In the upper voices avoid large leaps.

6. Have inner voices move conservatively.

7. bass voices may move about more freely than the upper voices.

What is a 4 part canon?

This is a music form consisting of 4 voices. The lead voice enters alone, and the other voices follow one by one. The following voices duplicate the form of the first voice, with some differences allowed according to the rules, and the voices come in at different pitches. This is a contrapuntal technique resembling but not identical to the fugue.
