Bessie could have cared less about politics and in those days black weren't allowed to vote so it really didn't matter. Bessie was 100% show biz and loved life and loved having a good time. She didn't care about politics. She couldn't read and write well either so unless she was told something she didn't read about the latest political aspects in the newspaper.

I have no idea of any political orientation of the so-called ( Empress of the Blues) She was known to have been friendly with the somewhat controversial writer Carl Van Vechten. Van Vechten , who also wrote about pets ( Tiger the in the House) was immensly enamored of Black Culture in the US. He was a white man.
