== == if i were you i would learn some chords and some melodys i would recommend the A-team 118 really easy to learn and fun to play if you have difficultys go to www.scampsmusic.com it has games on there to help you learn the basic methods to playing the guitar Recommended!! The 1st thing you should do is take lessons, if your teacher is nice they will provide you with a bass, and then you can see if you like it or not, next if its something you want to do, look for a bass starter pack they will not cost to much and will get you going until you need the professional stuff.

Ok, the real first thing is not necessarily lessons. The bass is a relatively easy instrument to just pick up and learn. Buy a bass. A used one can cost from $30 to $300. Bass packs give you everything you need to get started though. If you don't want to cough up some cash for lessons, start by learning the four open strings (the lowest four on the guitar: [highest to lowest] 1=G, 2=D, 3=A, 4=E). Keep in mind, each fret is a half step higher than the last. Learn to read music, if you don't know already. Buy a bass book. This will cost $30.00 at most. Read through it a couple of times, get familiar with your bass, and find some good music. Just remember that any instrument takes time to master, so practice! **EDIT** -- Although I said you should learn to read music, tabs are probably more useful to learn if you wish to persue the bass for a rock band. I reiterate that lessons are completely unnecessary. I started plaing bass this year and if you are just starting, which you are probably not, try play only the beginner scale, my favourite.... London Bridges, its the easiest song i know...but i know more!

When I was first learning to play Bass Guitar I spent a lot of time jamming along with Eric Claptons From the Cradle and Unplugged. While the guitar licks are brilliant and difficult, the bass lines are almost all simple variants of the 12-bar-blues box. So the music is fun to listen to (IMHO) and easy to jam with.

BB Kings The Thrill is Gone also has a very simple bass line, but since the song is 8 minutes long is a good stamina builder.

Keep in mind when youre first getting started, you don't have to play the song just like the guy on the record. You can just drive the root notes if you like. Rote memorization isn't what you need to be working on... whats important is keeping a tempo, developing an ear, and training your hands to work the instrument.

So don't feel bad if you cant keep up, just find the notes you can & every time you try it youll get a little better.

I should note that most importantly, you should find songs in genres you already like, or songs you are already familiar with to play along with... that way you will enjoy practicing, and will be more likely to stick with it. I am a blues junkie, and so that's all i know to recommend, if you have some other genre in mind you might start a new question which is more specific.

Not Smoke on the Water, certainly. The guitar line is easy to play on bass, but the bass line starts easy and then gets impossible for the beginner (you may recognise the voice of experience...) Iron Man, NIB or Black Sabbath by Black Sabbath, Black Night by Deep Purple, When Love and Death Embrace or The Sacrament by HIM, Holy Diver by Dio, Solitude by Candlemass.

I found it really easy to learn viva la vida, im self taught and its the same tune through out :)♥

The first song I learned on guitar was Don't Cry by Guns N' Roses. It's prety easy if you practice slowly. You can basically play anything if you practice very slowly and consistently, and if you practice your scales- practicing scales is a must. i am 14 and i can play sweet child o mine and one (metallica) and a bunch of stuff. i taught myself to play tab. tab is the easiest way to play for a beginner. but i suggest learning tab then try smoke on the water. http://www.guitaretab.com/d/deep-purple/4950.html
