The term medium refers to the materials which an artists uses.
Many mediums have been used by painters but there are four main mediums often considered:
1. Fresco, in which a pigment is mixed with water and applied to wet plaster;
2. Tempera, in which pigment is mixed with egg and applied to a very hard smooth surface, usually several layers of rubbed plaster (gesso);
3. Oil on canvas or prepared wood panel;
4. Water color which is pigment mixed with water and applied to smooth or rough white paper.
An art medium is a general word to describe the material used to create the piece of art. Paint is a medium as is clay, Photography, marble or bronze. The list is quite long with all of the new forms of art, like video art and installation art.

well, the first thing i think about, is you've got to have some sort of instrument. That would be your first medium. After that, you would need air, so that the vibrations from the instruments can move and mix.
