Very tough question- A British funded Railroad started in the 1800's- Some of it was in Canada. Other parts were in the northern U.S.A. Some places it ended was the east side of Lake Michigan and west side of Lake Huron. The rock group Grand Funk Railroad was named after the Grand Trunk Railroad. There were lots of lines all over the upper mid west and east and Canada. Looking at a map of this railroad will help you understand, because it's complicated. The railroad had financial problems and still retained the name after it was sold off. Canada wanted railroads, which were subsidized, because they were getting behind the U.S., and needed highways from east to west, which they didn't have in the early days.
