The Powhatan were actually a federation of many small tribes, each with their own customs. We know very little about them because no detailed study was made before most of the tribes were absorbed into other groups, became extinct or moved further west under pressure from European settlements.

In general, men were warriors and hunters while the women were gardeners and gatherers. Dwellings were long-houses of timber covered with birch bark or woven mats. The main crop was maize but fish, deer and other game was also hunted. Villages would be moved periodically to new sites cleared by burning, creating clearings in the forest.

One unique custom among warriors was to have designs tattooed on their backs to show which village they belonged to, or which was their particular chief.
