Emo was originally is a subgenre of hardcore punk which emerged from the DC hardcore movement on the 1980s. This music was chaotic and incredibly passionate. In the 1990s, the genre evolved into two waves: "screamo" pioneered by Saetia, and "Midwestern emo," which combined some of the earlier emo characteristics with elements of indie rock.
Nowadays the term emo is often misappropriated to pop-punk and mainstream rock bands with emotional lyrics, such as: Fall Out Boy, My Chemical Romance, Panic at the Disco, and Paramore.
