Haydn wrote a vast amount. He was the first to write what we today call symphonies, and he wrote 104 of them -- that we know of. (The next most were from Mozart, with 41). Among the most popular today are:

  • the "Surprise" Symphony
  • the "Military" Symphony
  • the "Clock" Symphony

(It's customary to list a symphony's number, its key, and its opus number; however, I'm keeping this simple).

Haydn also wrote a number of oratorios -- like operas, but more singing, less action. The most famous is "The Creation". The music for its "Chaos" segment is advanced well beyond the standards of his day, and is said to have disturbed his audiences considerably.

During Haydn's lifetime, the valved Trumpet was invented, the kind thought of ever since as simply "the trumpet". The valves let it produce every note in its range, instead of just the triad available to the unvalved ("natural") trumpet. Which also meant it could play in different keys.

Haydn wrote the first concerto for it, and it's still popular today. (Some trumpeters must have become very expert with the new trumpet, very fast).

However, with all the symphonies, concerti, oratorios, chamber works, etc etc that Haydn wrote, others will certainly have further and different answers than this.

Beethoven wrote nine symphonies including Eroica, Pastoral and Choral. He wrote five piano concertos including Emperor Concerto (Opus 73). His 32 piano sonatas include Pathetique Sonata (Op. 13), Moonlight Sonata (Op. 27/2), Appassionata (Op. 57) and the Hammerklavier (Op. 106). Bagatelle in A minor (WoO 59) is presumably his most popular piece for solo piano, best known as Fur Elise.
