It seems that they make a new kind everyday! I went to a Flute convention once and found in the exhibition hall a flute for sale made out of PVC piping that looked as if it was 6 feet tall!

There are many folk instruments that I am not familiar with, so here is a list of the more common types of flutes that are currently used and sold:

  1. Concert Flute - in the key of C, most commonly seen in stores as well as bands and orchestras as the flutist's principal instrument.
  2. Piccolo - in the key of C as well, but pitched an octave (or eight notes) above the standard flute.
  3. Bass flute - in the key of C, sounds an octave (or eight notes) below the standard flute.
  4. Alto flute - in the key of G.
  5. Soprano flute - in the key of Eb.
  6. Tenor flute - in the key of Bb.
  7. Treble flute - in the key of G.

How many different types flute are there?

Ah, well, there are a lot. If you're just talking modern flutes, there's the regular Flute, the Western concert flute. Then there's the familiar piccolo, bass and alto. There are also more rare types, like treble, soprano, contra-alto, contrabass, subcontrabass, double contrabass, and hyperbass. That's eleven. Then I'm not sure if you want to include less modern flutes like the pan flute and the Greek double flute. If that's the case, the list might go on forever, as the flute is a very old instrument and nearly every major civilization created their own take on it.
