It seems that they make a new kind everyday! I went to a Flute convention once and found in the exhibition hall a flute for sale made out of PVC piping that looked as if it was 6 feet tall!
There are many folk instruments that I am not familiar with, so here is a list of the more common types of flutes that are currently used and sold:
nose flutes
a harmony flute is like a bass flute or an alto flute meanwhile a regular flute is anything other than those types : )
Alto flute has a lower pitch than a normal flute.
go look it up on google. it has ALL different websites for different flute songs
Ah, well, there are a lot. If you're just talking modern flutes, there's the regular Flute, the Western concert flute. Then there's the familiar piccolo, bass and alto. There are also more rare types, like treble, soprano, contra-alto, contrabass, subcontrabass, double contrabass, and hyperbass. That's eleven. Then I'm not sure if you want to include less modern flutes like the pan flute and the Greek double flute. If that's the case, the list might go on forever, as the flute is a very old instrument and nearly every major civilization created their own take on it.
There are different hand position for playing a flute. It depends on what you are trying to play on the flute.

Piccolo is a different instrument than the flute.
A modern flute can be made of several materials. Common examples are nickel (metal alloy containing brass and nickel), silver, gold (white, rose, ect), and different types of wood.

To play a flute, you hold it up to your mouth, but don't cover the mouthpiece with your mouth. Blow air across the mouthpiece, and press down keys in different combinations to get out different notes. (See a flute fingering chart.)
