If you're used to nylon strings, you'll find at first that steel strings can hurt your left hand finger tips and if you're playing without a pick you might even tear off some skin of your thumb (you'll have to go at it pretty hard to actually hurt yourself like that, though).
Additionally, steel strings are much thinner, and without callused skin on your left hand it might not be possible for you to press them down all the way at first.
Once you're used to it, playing steel strings is no harder or easier than nylon.

∙ 15y agoThis depends on the guitar. A classical guitar is usually designed with nylon strings in mind and installing steel strings on it will put more tension on the neck & may damage the guitar.
Conversely, an acoustic guitar which was designed with steel strings in mind may sound very different (and have a much quieter voice) with nylon strings installed. Additionally nylon strings are intended to be tied on at the bridge, while steel strings usually have a ball or some type of knob at the end of the string which is what binds it to the bridge. Putting nylon strings onto a guitar designed for steel may require some creative knot-tying.
Many people feel that nylon strings are easier on the fingertips and are thus more comfortable to play on, others may take the "no pain no gain" attitude and feel that toughening up the fingertips is a vital part of the process.

This will cause the neck to pull forward causing the distance of the strings from the fret tops to decrease greatly making the instrument difficult to play. The tuning gear rollers on nylon instruments are also different. They are normally made from plastic which will not support the pressure of the steel strings. I use D'addario XL .010 - .046 strings and they sound great. They are Electric Guitar strings though. Elixir strings are also good but for an acoustic guitar instead. For acoustic guitar, a good pair will cost 15-20 bucks. Elixer's are really the best sounding acoustic string you can buy, and they last the longest. After playing Elixer's, everything else will sound dull.
