You can get lists of developmental milestones from your pediatrician that you can compare your child's skills with. Also, there are good books out there--my favorites from raising my own kids (dated) were the series by Ilg and Gesell entitled "Your One Year Old" and so on. Take the information and then try to give the child practice during playtime in developing the skill. Being able to feed themselves, dressing themselves, being able to pedal are typical. Remember that some will do things earlier, and others later. If speech is delayed, contact the local school district when the child is three--in fall or early spring--to get him tested. Most schools have early intervention programs at no cost.
