Some valve guards can actually tarnish the silver/ lacquer of the instrument rather than protecting it. This happened to me on my Bach Stradivarius and now there is raw brass in one spot on the valve casing. I recommend that you wash it first, and check for blackness or other discoloration of the horn periodically.

What is the difference between a bugle and a coronet?

A bugle (usually) doesn't have valves, while a cornet almost always does. This means a cornet can play notes that are not possible on the bugle, but the instruments are similar enough that someone who can play a cornet can also play a bugle (or just mimic one on a cornet by not using the valves).

What is a natural trumpet?

A natural trumpet is a trumpet played without valves. It is typically straight (not curved like a modern trumpet). The notes are changed using the lip muscles, aided by some holes drilled in the trumpet (although the holes are mostly used for fine tuning the instrument).
