What are the exact year and wood stain finish and sizes of don henley's first Ludwig drums?
Early 70s (maybe 70' or 71') Ludwig 3 ply shells with either Mahogany or Walnut stain. The kit looks like a 22, 13, 16, 18 with a Supraphonic metal snare drum. He used that kit (with the bottom heads off) for many years, starting with his stint with Linda Ronstadt. He used that same kit through 77' for sure, maybe 78'. He just added the timbales for Hotel California in 76. Later he used the blonde Ludwig concert tom kit with 22" bass drum and 4 large single headed concert toms (what looks like 13,14,15,16) with a large 18 floor tom recording "The Long Run" and subsequent tour until the band broke up in July, 1980.

hey, I play a vintage Ludwig kit and finding the exact bass drum has proved futile. It really depends a lot on what you are hoping to do. If you want the "look" from a dbl bass kit, i'd say get the same bass drum if you can. If you want it for the practical use, i would invest in a dbl bass pedal. if you use another bass drum that is different you may have a headache getting them tuned to sound exact (though this can still be an issue w/ the exact custom bass drum if you get two). With a good dbl bass pedal, both beaters hit the same drum for the same sound. Not sure if this helps. Either way, keep hittin' away! Hey thanks so much! I am the questioner but what set do you have? I got my set from my dad for Christmas from the biggest drum shop on the east coast! I am mainly adding on for both look and practice. Drums are actually very hard to play. You do FOUR THINGS simultaneously.. i dont know the exact answer to this, but ive been playing drums for almost 4 years. The thing about drums is that, unlike most instruments, you only need one hand to make one note. Guitar you would need your strumming hand, and the hand on the neck of the guitar. Trumpet you only have to use one hand, but you have to change pitch with your lips. On drums, all the notes are litterally in front of you, and you only have 2 arms to move onto a set of drums, compared to 10 fingers and an array of lip movements. i hope that helped. Most people think they are easy to play because at the root of the instrument it's just keeping a beat, kind of like tapping your toe to a song. Look up basic rock beat on youtube to see the easiest thing to play. It's learning how to have your 4 extremities do different things at the same time, totally out of your bodies natural rythym, that is hard. The better you get at that, the more you can CREATE a groove, rather than just keep a beat.
