The black capped chickadee is pretty constant in habits and appearance across it's range. The nearly identical Carolina chickadee is found in some areas frequented by the black capped, albeit more southerly in distribution. Somewhat smaller, with less rufus on the sides and less white in the wings, the Carolina will hybridize with the black capped where both birds are found, leading to confusion. The best way to tell the two apart is by voice. The black capped has a clear "chicka dee dee dee, the Carolina's is more hurried and higher pitched. The black capped's call note is a clearly whistled "fee bee ee, where as the Carolina's is a"fee bee, fee bay".
