The Temptations, The Jackson 5, & The Supremes
The three most important Motown vocal groups are The Supremes, The Temptations, and The Four Tops. The Supremes, led by Diana Ross, became one of the best-selling female groups in music history with hits like "Stop! In the Name of Love." The Temptations were known for their smooth harmonies and choreography, producing classics such as "My Girl." The Four Tops, famous for their deep, soulful sound, delivered enduring hits like "I Can't Help Myself (Sugar Pie Honey Bunch)."
Three of Marvin Gaye's songs were political: "What's Goin' on", "Mercy, mercy me", and "This ain't livin' (Make want ta' holler)". Smokey Robinson sang "Abraham, Martin and John". Diana Ross and the Supremes sang "The Happening", but don't remember what 'happened'. Edwin Starr sang "War, what is it good for?", but I'm not sure he was with Motown. ----
why they call it motown
One notable black singing group that didn't achieve success with Motown Records in the 1960s was The Satintones. Formed in 1959, they were one of the first groups to sign with Motown, but despite their early promise and hits like "My Beloved," they struggled to find lasting fame. Their lack of commercial success led to their eventual disbandment, while other Motown acts soared to iconic status.
