If you are not a violinist (or a player of another instrument in the string family), this term will mean little to you. It stands for pizzacato, and it means essentially that the strings are to be plucked and not bowed. You have heard music played this way-- the effect is quite beautiful. The sound tends to be lighter, although dynamics can be applied. Tones are not suspended, because the bow is not drawing across the string.

Simile means to continue in a similar fashion. For example, if in string music, you see "pizz" (pizzicato) above 2-3 notes followed by "simile" above the following notes, all of the following notes are played with pizz as well (until told otherwise [arco]).
