After tournaments, give them meat. Don't ever feed them potatoes, unless it says they like it. Don't ever give them any stat-raising items, because they shorten their lifespan. Only play with them half the time they ask for it, but play if they do something good and don't play if they do something bad. You can get new monsters by beating certain tournaments, but do not send them if they are tired or if they have low loyalty.
