Anything and or Everything; sad to say. The problem you describe is a random occurrence problem, and they are the hardest thing in the world to diagnose (find). It could be a random short or open wire, plug, harness, sensor, computer, power lead, ground lead, etc. You would need to take this car to an electrical specialist that has a 'wiggle tester' to find the problem (and yes a wiggle tester is a real instrument - and costly).

Often the smell of burning rubber is an electrical wire that is overheating and causing the plastic sheathing to melt and burn. Sometimes there can be enough resistance to heat a wire but not cause the metal to melt, just the plastic. Trace out with eyesight and your nose, to find the area and possibly the faulty wire. If not findable, pass what you could discover onto someone that is able to look further into this matter.

Sounds like its burning coolant. Perhaps it needs a new head gasket....
Could also be that your car is running to hot (over heating). This can sometimes be mistaken for electrical wires being overloaded , and getting to hot. Check thermostat, and condition of coolant....
