George Bizet, a French composer, is most well known for his opera Carmen. Originally rejected, it only gained popularity after Bizet's death. Various aspects such as the dynamic main character, Carmen, the exoticism of the setting, Spain, and the overall genius composing of Bizetgarneredit newpopularity in the early twentieth century. It's popularity could also be attributed to the new style opera-verismo, or 'realistic', that was gaining popularity via Bizet's contemporary, Puccini, with operas like "Madame Butterfly" and "La Boheme". The verismo opera rejected the use of nobility and high class characters. Instead, it often used lower class characters in exaggerated, everyday situations. Carmen, for instance, was a prostitute, an uncommon character, let alone a main protagonist. For a french opera, it was also vastly different from the "calm and restricted' music of the past.

Exoticism
Exoticism (from 'exotic') is a trend in art and design, influenced by some ethnic groups or civilizations since the late 19th-century. In music exoticism is a genre in which the rhythms, melodies, or instrumentation are designed to evoke the atmosphere of far-off lands or ancient times (e.g. Ravel's Daphnis et Chloé and Tzigane for Violin and Orchestra, Debussy's Syrinx for Flute Solo or Rimsky-Korsakov's Capriccio espagnol). Like orientalist subjects in 19th century painting, exoticism in the decorative arts and interior decoration was associated with fantasies of opulence.
