Looking back at the 1970's and the outfits ABBA wore onstage, there is really no name for it. Between the spandex and spangles it's a wonder they didn't blind the audience. And how they balanced on those platform shoes defies logic and the physics of nature. But wasn't it great!

When Abba first started performing in the early 70s they wore conservative casual clothes. Search YouTube for the 1972 video of their first hit "People Need Love". By 1974, when they were trying to capture the world's attention, they adopted a kind of glam rock look that really didn't work so well, and they're still living it down to some extent. Search for the video of their 1974 appearance at the Eurovision Song Contest. By the mid 70s they'd toned it down but their designer, the great Owe Sandström, produced some dramatic costumes that were meant to attract attention and show off Frida and Agnetha's great bodies, like his two-piece Indonesian cat dresses (that had a floor-length gown that stripped off to reveal a tiny miniskirt). By the time of their 1979 North American tour he had the girls in spandex and choir-like robes (see video of their sold-out concerts at Wembley Arena in London) but by the early 80s they were favouring more conservative clothes again. (See video of their performances on the Dick Cavett show from 1981). Bjorn Ulvaeus has admitted in recent interviews that they were rather clueless when it came to fashion.

Many of ABBA's onstage outfits were garish even for the 1970s. Skintight spandex for the men and short and/or tight clothes for the women, and platform shoes five stories tall. Watching old videos of the band I'm always surprised one of them didn't fall off their shoes and break their neck.

they wore a series of 70's clothes and on tour they would wear cat dresses/costumes, they wore wigs, big earrings and big high heel boots.
