Trains were first powered by steam locomotives that created it's own steam using fire and water.

The locomotive looked very basic, with allot of the mechanisms exposed, kind of "Naked".

A train in the truest sense is made up of an engine called the locomotive, and the rail cars that are pulled or pushed by the locomotive.

So the first trains looked pretty lightweight when compared to the ones operating today. As materials they used to construct the locomotives, rail cars, and the rails themselves improved this allow them to haul heaver loads. So things got bigger very quickly, going from lightweight to heavyweight.
