These days, it is quite difficult to become a popstar simply because it's all commercialized. Having said that, doesn't the word popstar infer a sense of celebrity and large following? Thus: it basically is the commercial viability of a singer!

It's all about the style and voice, and the fame... so you'll need to be picked up by a record label who have millions of dollars in promotion/advertising, as well as great B2B (busienss-to-business) distribution lines.

Many popstars, such as BSB and Miley Cyrus, start off from a Chuch choir (it's a good place to start if you're going for a Disney look). You need to adopt your marketable image though. So if you're going for more of the Paris Hilton thing, you need a different introduction into the industry (such as a rich father ;) ha ha!).

Another idea is also programs like American Idol. Yes, lots of people go for it so it's quite hard; but it helps you test your marketable image (tht is what they do actually - not voice!). If you know a singing teacher, they'll tell you that too because the students they've put on are even better than the singers on there!

Another idea is also to make your own website, MySpace, and to send it into industry journalist. You can then send it into a few radio stations
