Geared tuning pegs are better than friction pegs.
The quality of strings makes a difference, but a new set can be purchased for less then $10.
Solid wood is better than veneers. But it also costs much more!
There are many different shapes to consider, but most people recommend getting one of the standard figure 8 to start and learn on.
