A resonator guitar is primarily associated with the blues - although does find its way into many other Americana' styles such as folk, bluegrass, etc. It was originally designed in a time before amplification - so the player needed to have the sound project louder and sharper than a standard acoustic guitar.

They have a neat sound and sound great with a slide. You can get a cheap one (Fender) for about $250 I think. Real Dobros and Nationals can get rather pricey.
