The abbreviations used to be "A.D." for "Anno Domini" (the year of our Lord), and "B.C." for Before Christ. Jesus was supposedly born in 0 A.D. So the years 1974, or 1033, or 831 were all A.D., for Anno Domini (after Christ). Ancient times (before 0 A.D.) were called "B.C." for Before Christ.
The abbreviations were changed from A.D. and B.C. to C.E. and B.C.E. to make them more politically correct (as not everyone believes in Jesus).
