Hammering is a stringed instrument technique where a note is first struck, either on an open string or a lower(tonaly) fret, then the player fingers a higher (lower on the neck) fret while the chord or note is still sounding. The opposite of this is a "pull-off" and the two techniques complement each other well. It can be used on fretted or non-fretted instruments. It is a technique requiring some dexterity as the hammer-on needs to be done quickly and with force or else the string will mute from contact with the finger.

To accurately play the "hammer on" technique on guitar tabs, you need to strike a note and then quickly press down on a higher fret without picking the string again. This creates a smooth and connected sound. Practice by starting with a clear initial note and then swiftly hammering on to the higher fret to produce a clean and distinct sound.
