Hammering is a stringed instrument technique where a note is first struck, either on an open string or a lower(tonaly) fret, then the player fingers a higher (lower on the neck) fret while the chord or note is still sounding. The opposite of this is a "pull-off" and the two techniques complement each other well. It can be used on fretted or non-fretted instruments. It is a technique requiring some dexterity as the hammer-on needs to be done quickly and with force or else the string will mute from contact with the finger.

That means put your hand on the 7th fret, and "hammer on" the 9th fret of the same string, basically put your pointer finger on the 7th fret, strum the string, then use your next finger and put it on the 9th fret without strumming
