Bessie Smith...is deceased!
Famous Living black blues singer then I would suggest--Shemekia Copeland who was recntly crownedthe NEW Queen of the Blues. Shemekia comes from blues Roylaty as she was the daughter of Johnny Copeland. It is in her blood.
Diana may have played a woman who sang the blues but she is really NOT a blues singer. The list of great woman blues singers is not the same size list of old. Many of the greats have died. The most recent death was of Koko Taylor and her daughter recently crowned Shemekia Copeland as the NEW Queen of the Blues. I would also include Bonnie Raitt, Rory Black and Susan Tedeshi.
Memphis Minnie! She was one of the first electric guitarist (T-Bone Walker & Charlie Christian were the other 2) but was also just a Blue Monday dream! She beat Big Bill Broonzy, Tampa Red, Muddy Waters & Howlin' Wolf every time! Looked fabulous but played a zillion times better!!
muddy waters, bb king, Bessie smith are amongst many of the great blues artist that have roamed the earth!!

Janis Joplin is my personal favorie. Other famouse female blues singers of the 20th century include Bessie Smith, Koko Taylor and Eta James
