Figurative language is the opposite of literal language. When something is literal, it means exactly what it says: for example, Donna is a professor. But figurative language is often used by authors, poets, songwriters, etc because it uses similes, metaphors, and other literary devices that paint a picture with words. For example, if I say "Love is like a rose," I am using a simile (comparing two unlike things and showing a relationship between them, using like or as). Obviously, love is an emotion and a rose is a flower, but the writer wants you to think of the qualities of a rose (it's beautiful, it has a wonderful fragrance, but it also has thorns and can hurt you) and compare them to love.

Taylor Swift as a songwriter is very aware of using these kinds of literary devices in her songs, and you can find lots of figurative language. An excellent example is "Love Story," which refers back to the famous play "Romeo and Juliet." Obviously, she is not Juliet, a fictional character created by Shakespeare, and her boyfriend isn't Romeo. But in the song, that comparison is made (when you refer back to a famous work of literature, that is called an "allusion"). She says he will be the prince and she will be the princess-- except in real life, she is not the child of royalty, nor is he; so this is not meant to be literal. It's a fantasy she has, and she is trying to paint a picture of herself as the princess who is waiting for her handsome prince.
