It is erroneous to think there are "Four chords that are in every pop song". Some songs have 8-9 different chords in them, some have 2 - there has been an occasional hit song all on onechord.

The most common chords in most pop songs are the I, IV and V chords of whatever key the song is in. In the key of C those would be C, F, and G. In the key of E they would be E, A, and B, and so on. Next most common is probably the vi chord. In the key of C that's Am, in the key of E it's C#m.

There aren't really any specific top 4. Many bands may use the same ones over and over but it all just depends on their preferance. When playing you can use any chords you want, as long as they make an awesome sound together!

Do rock stars actually know all chords?

if you learn some basic music theory, you can build all of the chords yourself! many rock stars might know lots of chords, but if you learn what a chord is made out of (a root, a third, a fifth, a seventh, and even higher notes like a 9th, 11th, etc) then you can make your own chords- if you learn how to play the chords you create on your instrument, you might be using chords your favorite rock stars might not even know!

Punk Rock was an answer to the over produced and over arranged prog rock that was big in the late 70's. Groups like the Ramones wanted a more raw and stripped down rock (pop) music that was heavy and driving but only used three or four chords similar to the early rock of the 1950's

What are the chords of an electric guitar?

the chords are a combination of notes on the neck that fretted together make one big note. The most common in rock music are called power chords where you do something like this. E---------------- B---------------- G---------------- D--4-----7----5 A--2-----5----5 E--0 ----0----3 if you don't know what i just wrote this is called guitar tabliture and it helps you learn other peoples music as well as write your own without sheet music. You can buy books , find chords online or even something odd like a poster to show you all the chords. My friend has a poster with it. With chords you can do them anywhere on the neck , just place your fingers anywhere that looks like it will work and try. They can have two notes , four notes or go crazy and see what you can come up with. Reverse chord look up I think it's called when you can figure weird ones out. In lower tunings play the same chords and see how differently they sound.
