Simple answer, heavier the strings the better the tone. Standard guitar strings are 009 guage and this is good for beginners however moving up to 010's will incease the bottom end and most pro's will use heavier guages. Many metal bands also tune down either to e flat or d, some tune even lower. Basic rule increase the string guage as you tune down eg 010's in E, 011's in E flat 012's in D to maintain the same sort of tension. Players such as Zakk Wykde use 010's for the top three strings then much heavier for the D, A and Low E. Experiment with all these approaches to find what works for you best.
