This is a ticketable offense - Failure to Display Registration Card. They probably will

radio in (or use the car computer) to ascertain the registered owner of the car. If it is NOT you, you may be there awhile while he/she (if they're in a good mood) tries to ascertain if you're legally in possession of the car. If things are busy (or they are in a not-so-nice mood) they may have you park the car, and then take the keys back to the station for 'safekeeping.' OR - they could simply impound the car altogether, tow it and store it until you (or the owner) produces proof of possession or ownership and pays the impound fee.

Moral of the story: Make certain you have the registration and proof of insurance whenever you drive.

Then this could be considered a traffic criminal offense, for which you could get arrested and taken to jail. In some states, like Florida, if your drivers license was suspended for less than four months, you could be issued a traffic citation for which a mandatory court appearance is required. If it has been longer than four months suspended then you could get arrested and taken to jail. And the penalties can be enhanced. Habitual.
