Music (Rock N Roll, Country, Gospel, Rhythm and Blues)

Fashion (his clothes, hair, and style was wholly unique starting from his early teens until his - sadly - death in August of 1977)

The Music Industry - by bringing Gospel songs to a live "rock" audience Elvis proved that quality will always be accepted and appreciated.

Generations of Musicians/Singers - From The Beatles to American Idol contestants Elvis continues to inspire Worldwide

Las Vegas - Elvis sold out every appearance in Las Vegas at a time when he was doing two shows a night for 30 straight nights and when his concert venue was TWICE as large as the nearest "competition"

TV - Elvis' appearances from the Dorsey Brothers Show, Steve Allen, Ed Sullivan, Welcome Back Special with Frank Sinatra, 1968 Elvis Special (aka; comeback special), 1973 Aloha from Hawaii (which was seen by OVER 1 billion people worldwide). Elvis set records for audience viewing and the HIGHEST percentage of viewer to population...ever achieved by anyone.

Hollywood - Elvis is the only actor to star in every motion picture and it make money. No other actor has eve achieved this.

Live Performances - Elvis sold out every concert he participated in from 1955 and then from 1969 through 1977. Yes Elvis toured, and SOLD OUT throughout the United States, for (8) eight years straight...unheard of.

Gospel Music - Anyone who ever met Elvis was amazed at his knowledge/passion of Gospel Music. He said "I know every Gospel song ever written" and he proved it to the most intimidating panel ever...Gospel Artists themselves. Elvis went to, he stayed backstage as not to take away from the performers, the Gospel Award Shows many times and never failed to leave a positive impression.

The World - Elvis proved that one can grow up dirt (literally) poor and through hard work, and using the talents God has given us all, achieve success.

His Family/Friends/Loved Ones - Without hesitation Elvis was a great friend who was loyal to a fault.

Charities - Elvis was, publicly and privately, the most "giving" person/entertainer ever. Whether it was giving away the concert proceeds to charity - to helping the widow/children of a slain police officer - to raising money for St. Judes - to raising money for Polio vaccine - to raising money for the March of Dimes - to giving away Cadillacs - to the annual charities he gave to every year in Memphis. Unlike 99.9% of the entertainers/people today Elvis was in the (95% at one point) HIGHEST TAX BRACKET and never maximized his tax write off's.

You (and people like you) - Who are curious and are brave enough to ask questions online. Thanks

Elvis Presley is the King of Rock n' Roll. While he did not 'invent' rock n' roll- that was Chuck 'Little Richard' Berry's job- he was the one to really bring rock n roll to white America. Rock n' roll was a combination of jazz, blues, gospel, and country, and teens and adolescents seemed to love it. Many parents and adults, however, seemed to think it was the devil's music- ironic because Presley himself was devoutly christian. In 1954 the manager of Sunset Studios had Elvis record 'That's All Right, Momma', and a local DJ played the track 17 times over the course of just one day. Soon the 19-year-old truck driver became a national sensation, and put on performances that were so wild he sometimes had to hide backstage to avoid the fans. In 1956 Elvis began his career as an actor with Love Me Tender, and starting in 1962 he made three movies a year. People swarmed to his concerts and to the theaters to see all of his movies, although the more serious his movies the less well they did at the box office, something Presley was disappointed with (he had been interested in pursuing a serious career in acting). Elvis Presley was, and still is, a rock n' roll great, and his music and sensational style on the stage still influences song writers and performers today.

Elvis' contributions to our culture can not be overestimated.

Probably his greatest contributions are kicking in the door of racism in America, and turning the world onto rock and roll, and the power of individual creative expression. In other words, being true to yourself in the face of criticism, and acclaim.

As a poor kid in Mississippi he was exposed to the blues and gospel music of his region, and being so impoverished, his family lived, and was treated (looked down upon) in much the same way as the rural African Americans. This is what shaped his character. It was Elvis who turned the whole world onto the blues.

Entire generations of kids learned who the great blues men were because of the music Elvis recorded. This influence reached everyone from The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, etc., and rescued many of the original blues men from obscurity. It was Elvis' refusal to bow to the conformity of his day that changed popular music forever. Just check out the record charts for five years before Elvis, and then look at them for all time after Elvis. No one person invented rock and roll. Elvis never claimed to either - but he never, ever denied credit the the musicians who influenced him. There is hardly any area of modern popular culture that hasn't been influenced by Elvis: fashion, music, marketing, race relations, concert promotions, TV, recording techniques - lists could go on and on. Even today, over 1/2 a century after he first recorded, he is still the mark that success in the entertainment is measured by- as attested by the way that artists like Michael Jackson, Kanye West, and even Garth Brooks' seek comparisons between themselves and Elvis'. Elvis showed the world the "American Dream" and the power of the individual being true to his own vision.

Elvis inspired young people to do things they wouldn't normally do. Like sing, dance, or act for example. He changed a whole generation with his apparently vulgar hip movments and fashion.
