guitar and others
Heitor Villa-Lobos, the Brazilian composer, is known to have written over 1,000 compositions. His works encompass a wide variety of genres, including orchestral, chamber, and choral music, as well as operas and guitar pieces. Among his most famous works are the "Bachianas Brasileiras" and the "Choros" series, which reflect his unique blend of Brazilian folk music and classical traditions. Villa-Lobos is regarded as one of the most significant figures in 20th-century classical music.
My personal favorite is Garoto (Anibal Augusto Sardinha) although most would probably answer Heitor Villa-Lobos, whose guitar music is absolutely standard in the literature, and most top players and students as well, play at least SOME of Villa-Lobos' guitar works. However, I chose Garoto based on the inner energy and beauty of his music, which I find much more appealing than the music of HVL, and in addition, seems to me to be more idiomatic, or representative, of many of the greats - Jobim, Baden Powel. etc. Garoto influenced them all, and yet, received far less recognition (at least internationally) than Villa-Lobos, perhaps because of Andres Segovia who brought Villa-Lobos' guitar music to the concert stage. Garoto is to Brazilian Guitar as Chopin is to the Romantic Piano. Positively gorgeous, unmistakable, and the model that everybody copies from.
