a piano.
The harpsichord, clavichord and clavier are three such instruments.
The piano evolved ffrom the harpsichord, an instrument in which the strings were plucked, rather than hit with hammers (like the piano).
The sound of the piano is like these sticks with cotton tips hitting string which tighten as they get higher which is why it is a percussion instrument

Piano belongs to a percussion instrument family. in order to produce a sound strings has to be struck by hammer. The striking action defines piano as a percussion instrument. Pianist is unable to produce the sound directly, like violinist or guitarist, for that reason piano can not be classified to string instrument family.
