a sphygomanometer is actually a tool used for measuring blood pressure in your arteries. the "instrument" refers to a tool, but i do see where you got that.
A measuring instrument is used almost everyday to see the degree or extent of something. When you get your feet measured for new shoes you are using a measuring instrument.

I did this not long ago in my ranger. There are four hole in the front of the radio, you must remove the trim around it to see them. They are on the four corners. They make a tool that fits in the holes and pushes the clips in and the radio pulss free. I used four drill bits that just fit in the holes. luck.

Sound waves have a longer wavelength which allows them to bend around corners more than light waves.
A periscope is used in situations where people need to see up and over things or around corners. They were used in world war one in the trenches to see what was happening without risking getting shot. Submarines use them to see above the water when they are submerged. Periscopes also are used in some tanks and parts of visual fire control systems.
Using a mirror or any form of TIR yes you can, but unfortunately the human eye cannot see around corners.
