Like most Jazz musicians, Ferguson played a variety of styles in his 50 year career. The only real constant in his style was the use of a big band. Even when he uses 8 musicians on recordings, they tend to be a very small big band. Ferguson grew up in the bebop era, and this influenced most of his style, especially between 1950 and 1968. From 1968 to 1980 his style could be described as a fusion between pop and jazz in a big band setting. He returns to bebop standards, but also incorporates bits from other jazz styles by playing works composed by talented band members from about 1985 until his death in 2006. I think it is fair to say, however, that Maynard played what he liked, and didn't consider the style.
