^ The above comment is not totally accurate ^. He used a Gibson for a very small period but he predominantly always used a Martin & Co guitar throughout his life like the D-35 model

It is a special type of Harmonica, a chromatic harmonica, aka a "Harp"
Found this:

Unsure of the manufacturer, but rumour was the harmonica was one that he shoplifted from a store in Arnhem, Holland.

From Lennon interview 24-Sep-1974 on WNEW-FM, here's the doctor himself:

"Brian Jones came over and said "Are you playing a harmonica or a harp on "Love Me Do"?" He knew I'd got this bottom note and he suspected I was... I said a harmonica, you know, with a button... which wasn't real funky blues enough I suppose, but you couldn't get "Hey Baby" licks on a blues harp and we were also doing "Hey Baby" by Bruce Chanel at that time."

Apparently, Lennon is using the term "harp" to refer to a diatonic harmonica and the term "harmonica" to refer to a chromatic harmonica.
