Wendy Carlos (born Walter in Pawtucket RI, 1939) may not be the inventor of the entire genre, but she was certainly a major pioneer. Her synthesized recordings of Bach are still very enjoyable. She used the Moog Synthesizer.

Robert Arthur Moog and his company were producing equipment to generate electronic music in the 50's and 60's. He invented the Moog synthesizer, and was producing and selling kits for the building of theremins around that time as well.

Some of the early pioneers of electronic music which were pioneered in the 1930s, 40s, and 50s were musicians like Karlheinz Stockhausen, Gottfried Michael Koenig, Werner Meyer Eppler, John Cage, and Morton Feldman. They created electronic music by using electronic sounds and composing them into musical pieces. In the late 1960s and early 1970s, with inventions of instruments such as synthesizers like the Moog, groups of musicians, mostly from Europe, were experimenting with electronic music and sounds. This movement was revolutionary as musicians and bands such as Kraftwerk, Tangerine Dream, and Klaus Schulze were utilizing electronic based instruments for their music. Electronic music became revolutionary and influential. In the mid to late 1970s, more musicians such as Jean Michel Jarre, Vangelis, Tomita, David Bowie, Iggy Pop, Brian Eno and Giorgio Moroder were making electronic based music aswell. Many of these influential musicians from the 1950s, 60s, and 70s helped pioneer and create different genres of electronic music and help spread electronic music into the mainstream and make it part of music culture.
