Bell became a teacher of Vocal Physiology in Boston in 1871 and devoted himself to teaching deaf-mutes as well as spreading his father's system of "visible speech". His invention of the articulating phone in 1872-76, the photophone in 1880 and the graphophone in 1887 brought him fame and wealth. So, he didn't teach for many years and worked on his inventions.

First, understand that Edison was a "self publicist" and may of the things which he is attributed to have invented were in fact invented before him. For instance he did not actually invent the "light bulb", this was invented in 1800 by Humphry Davy. When you look closely many of Edison's "inventions" should not be attributed to him in the manner that they currently are.
