I'm not happy about the word disgrace. However, the obvious answer is the Nazi period. It's something that many Germans feel is a 'burden' that they have to live with. Bear in mind that the vast majority of Germans alive now were born after the end of World War 2; many others born earlier were far too young to play a part in World War 2. Yes, the Nazi period is always at the back of our minds but nowadays most people tend to pretend it never happened or they forget about it. Only our elders truly remember.
A close antonym for the concept of disgrace is the concept of honor or esteem as seen in the two opposite states disgraced/honored, disgraced/esteemed.The action to disgrace (oneself) would have the opposite distinguish or exalt(i.e. incur honor for one's family or peers).*The verb disgrace cannot be used (transitive) to mean belittle others, other than oneself or one's family.
