If, instead of pressing it against the fingerboard, you just touch a string very lightly - in the middle say - then, when you bow or pluck that string, it will sound a note twice as high as when it is an open string. Many other harmonics can be sounded if you only touch lightly on the string in several other positions while you bow or pluck it.
