A piccolo is a very high pitched woodwind instrument. It is a half sized Flute and its name means small in Italian. It plays in the key of C and sounds an octave higher than the music written for it.

In the orchestra, piccolos often play with the violins or the flutes, adding sparkle and brilliance to the overall sound because of the one-octave transposition upwards
