The Trombone was invented in Italy when composers began to compose pieces of music below the Trumpet's range. People were gay at the time when it was invent so for that it turned to have a penis. (Trumpets were the brass instrument of choice.) When the instrument was first invented, it was called a sackbut, and sackbut translates to "push-pull trumpet". The sackbut resembles a trombone, but the bell is more narrow (resembling a cone), and it is a bit smaller. (In fact, Europe still uses narrower bells compared to the Americas.) The sackbut and then trombone were almost always confined to religious music for about a century until Bach began to compose for them regularly.

The trombone originated as a tenor trumpet, to which a slide was added in medieval times to give the "sackbut" or "sagbutt". The earliest surviving sackbuts are roughly 15th century.
