A castrati Tenor was a Tenor who had been castrated so he would not go through puberty, and would therefore not experience a change in his voice. Repulsive though the practice may seem to us today, Castrati Tenors were highly prized in the Opera Houses of the Baroque period (approximately 1600 to 1750). Young boy sopranos were hand-picked for selection to be castrated. They could develop into castrati sopranos, altos or tenors, and as they grwe, they would develop more powerful lung power. The Castrati had an extensive vocal range and, because women were forbidden to perform on stage, they could play both masculine and feminine parts in the operas of the time.
