Preference is most important, but plasmas have been considered in the past to have better color and contrast. They have also been prone to image burn, where high contrast static images leave a faint imprint on the screen if they are displayed for long periods of time.
Plasma screen technology has largely overcome the image burn problem but LCD displays have also been improving with better color and higher contrast ratios.
Plasma screens are far less popular than they have been with LCD dominating the market in 2011 and 2012. There is little to choose between them so it is important that you see both and form your own opinion before committing to one or the other.
