Electronic Music, broadly, is any music produced in a non-acoustic manner. This then includes a large quantity of modern music, especially the popular genre, as this usually uses digital means of production, with instruments which may sopund acoustic actually being produced by sythesisers or software-synths [VST's].

As a genre however, Electronic Music or Electronica is more restrictive. Normally, to be categorised as a part of the genre, an artist must produce their music predominantly with computers and/or real or virtual synthesisers.

The genre it's self is wide ranging in style, containing ambient artists like Biosphere, and noise artists like Merzbow, and as such necessitates the use of sub-genres such as ambient, noise, drum & bass, drill & bass, IDM and Breakcore etc. This give persons unfamiliar with a particular artist a greater idea of their style.

Many record labels mainly release electronic music, such as rephlex and planet-µ. Warp Records along with other 80's acid house labels probably pioneered the synth-driven electronic sound typical of more underground artists [in the view of an "outsider"] such as Aphex Twin and Luke Vibert. In recent years Warp's roster has broadened to encompass a more wide-ranging sound. Art-rock such as !!! is increasingly prevalent, and other warp artists like Maximo Park have received critical acclaim, and much popularity outside the electronic fraternity of earlier warp releases.
