Why do some authors review themselves - isn't it very tacky and doesn't it scream 'desperate' or vain?

It is actually frowned upon for authors to review or rate themselves. And yes, I agree, it is tacky. Some sites such as Amazon actually have rules against authors reviewing themselves. And if reported by a customer, the self-review will normally be deleted and the author penalised.I cannot answer as to why they do it, even as an author myself. Their reasons are their own. Maybe they are trying to drive up their sales in an extremely competitive market. Or maybe they, like some I have unfortunately run across, feel they are better than Shakespeare (an impossibility) and deserve more recognition either out of greed or lust for attention. As of April 2015, Amazon has began cracking down on self-reviewers and authors who pay people for 5-star reviews. They are removing such reviews and, in some cases, are removing the book from their marketplace entirely, and penalising the author. If you see an author reviewing themselves, feel free to report it to the respective website. It may turn out to be against their rules.
