My first kit was a Simmons. I wasn't sure if I would like electrics and they were cheap. For sound and quality I like Yamaha.

(from Username IDODRUM) My first kit was also a Simmons SDS. Lately I've been playing a Roland TD-20. It depends on how much you want to delve into the innards of the drum module itself. The higher end kits have more versatility and more room to do more custom "tweaking". and then there are the more modest price units with good sounds right out of the box. You just have to go with a budget in mind if you have one and use your own ear to hear them. You tastes will be different than the next person.

There's plenty of electronic drum makers out there. Believe me, I just came back from NAMM and there are lots of great electronic kits and percussion available.

Hope this helps,

I think to be honest its down to personal choice. There are allot of fantastic manufacturers out there DW, yamaha, ludwig.... just to name a few. Me personally, I prefer Dw and yamaha, but im sure there will be someone out there that will disagree with me, i can count on that! Try as many different manufacturers as possible and try and find a sound you like and one that also suits the style of music you play.

From my experience all Drum brands are good for metal. It really depends on the tuning and the type of Wood or material the drum is made out of. But If I were to choose, Then Here are My thoughts and My opinions:

- Ludwig, Gretsch and Sonor are good brands for Jazz, funk blues and other soft music. They also produce good drums for Rock and Metal but I think they excel more on softer music.

-Yamaha and Pearl Are also good for playing jazz and funk but I think they are better on Rock and Metal and louder type of music.

-DW ,to me, is like the between rock and metal brand. I think its really suitable for those Hard hitting and loud genres. Although they are also good for funk and blues type of genre, I think due to the fact that they are custom drums and produce good sounding toms, They are better played on rock and hard rock genres ,as well as metal.

-Tama on the other hand to me is the best Drum brand for Heavier type of music such as Hard rock, Metal and Heavy Metal although they are also good for light music.

These are just my opinions and I suggest that you Check out different brands and different sets. Dont stick with one brand just cause your favorite drummer is using it. Stick with your taste, feel, and budget. Make sure you, yourself, love the ways it sounds.
