The cantata is a vocal genre which could be either secular or sacred and usually based on a lyric or dramatic poem. Solo vocalists, chorus and instrumentalists were part of the cantata presenting arias, recitatives and ensemble numbers.
Johann Sebastien Bach wrote many sacred cantatas that were used for the Lutheran services following the protestant reformation. They usually found their framework in the Lutheran chorale. Each Lutheran service used one cantata; over 60 were required for the year. Bach wrote four or five of these cycles.
