The cantata is a vocal genre which could be either secular or sacred and usually based on a lyric or dramatic poem. Solo vocalists, chorus and instrumentalists were part of the cantata presenting arias, recitatives and ensemble numbers.

Johann Sebastien Bach wrote many sacred cantatas that were used for the Lutheran services following the protestant reformation. They usually found their framework in the Lutheran chorale. Each Lutheran service used one cantata; over 60 were required for the year. Bach wrote four or five of these cycles.

The word Cantata is derived from the Italian word "cantare" which means "to sing".

It is a vocal genre which could be either sacred or secular featuring solos, chorus, and orchestra. Often based on a lyric or dramatic poem, the cantata was also used in the early protestant reformation days as part of a Lutheran service. Approximately 60 in total were required for a year.
